The character of Bridge Road is closely tied to this layered history. Many of its historic buildings remain remarkably present in the streetscape, with brick façades, traditional shopfronts and distinctive parapets giving the road its recognisable identity. Among them are a number of important civic and commercial buildings that reflect Richmond's development from a 19th-century municipality into the established inner-city neighbourhood it is today.
Within this setting, a new seating and planting installation introduces a quieter, more informal place to stop along the busy street. The design brings greenery and places to sit into an existing paved environment, creating an opportunity for people to pause, meet or simply take a break from the activity of Bridge Road.
The installation was developed around the particular conditions of the site. Rather than imposing a single large structure, a combination of seating and planters creates a more open arrangement that can accommodate different ways of using the space. Streetlife supplied Australian-made weathering steel elements, including Solid Edge Green Benches, Solid Hex Green Isles and a series of custom planters. Their proportions and configuration were adapted to work within the available space while maintaining clear movement through the area.
The choice of weathering steel adds another layer to the relationship with the surroundings. Its warm, changing patina sits naturally among the brick, masonry and other weathered materials that characterise much of Richmond's older streetscape. Over time, the material will continue to change, allowing the installation to become increasingly integrated with its setting.
Manufactured locally in Australia and delivered to Melbourne in 2025, the furniture forms a contemporary addition to a street shaped by a much longer history. Rather than competing with the architecture around it, the installation adds a new layer to the existing streetscape: more greenery, more opportunities to sit and a place to slow down within one of Richmond's most active urban corridors.
