A MASTERCLASS IN SPLASH PAD DESIGN: BUNBURY FORESHORE, DISCOVERY PARKS
11 Oct 2023
Koombana Bay, Western Australia, is paradise. With a stunning white sand shoreline and blowing clusters of dunegrass that separate the area’s lush natural landscape from the turquoise waves and active marine life, Koombana Bay is also the setting for a nautical themed splash park at Discovery Parks - Bunbury Foreshore.
Perched at the edge of Koombana Bay, the splash pad at Discovery Parks - Bunbury Foreshore is a creative expression of the beautiful surrounding landscape. A masterclass in how to design striking, aquatic playspaces, Waterplay chose to use muted blues, turquoises, stark whites, beiges, slate greys and pops of translucent reds and blues to create a nautical storyboard that feels as architectural as it does playful.
The design of the splash pad features a shoreline graphic painted onto the concrete that services as a jumping off point for space and place, and imagination. The sand and the sea separate two major play zones on the splash pad. On the sand, gentle and playful water features bring a fun and peaceful experience to the space with showering palm trees, flower cannons, seashell ground sprays, beachballs that gently cascade water, and spraying kites and windsocks. This slower paced play areas is a perfect setting for families, younger waterplayers, and those looking for a more contemplative play experience.
As waterplayers go from land to sea, the splash pad takes on a new energy. Out in the deep blue, a sea creature looms around a schooner that’s brimming with hands-on splash activities. Waterplayers can shoot water cannons, dodge the buckets at the stern, and steer the ship to safety. And if they jump ship, there’s a giant dumping bucket soaker to splash down on those who are brave enough.
Discovery Parks - Bunbury Foreshore is a one-of-a-kind playspace that ignites the imaginations of waterplayers and uplifts the surrounding space with its beautiful design and thoughtful layout.
