PROGRAM

The program for This Public Life will explore public life through the lenses of:

Life + Death

Deep connections with nature allow us to better understand natural systems and our relationship to those systems. What are the physical, philosophical and psychological benefits? How do we make 21st century landscapes more viable and more meaningful? What are our new environmental commons and how do they inform diverse narratives and possible futures?

Love + Longing

Our experience of the world is deeply subjective; through landscape we share experience, and acquire meaning. Can landscape create awareness, challenge our perceptions and mediate new meaning through phenomenology and desire? How do intimate personal experiences constitute shared public memory?

Participation + Spectacle

Moving beyond landscape as representation, we will explore the performative aspects of landscape and public involvement in the processes of production – through collaboration, perception and action – as we consider how to invite social participation, how technology enables social and ecological change, and what is tactical about urbanism.
