The Australian Institute of Landscape Architects’ (AILA) Queensland Landscape Architecture Awards 2017, celebrating the very best of the state’s open, public and green spaces, were announced at a sit down dinner reception on Thursday 22 June at Cloudland, Fortitude Valley in the presence of industry heavyweights and was live-streamed across the country.
The annual awards recognise the leadership and innovation that landscape architects bring to projects that enrich the environments we inhabit and enhance the state’s liveability and stimulate economic development.

Almost fifty projects entered the Queensland awards, with 14 winners crowned across 10 categories including civic landscape, community contribution, play spaces, parks and open spaces, landscape planning, urban design and land management.
The expert jury said community engagement was a key theme of this year’s awards with many projects reflecting how landscape architects have provided communities with genuine opportunities to participate and contribute to dialogue on projects.

“Landscape Architects have shown the importance of community engagement, reinforcing the benefits of meaningful interaction with the community enriching project outcomes and undoubtedly contributing to success,” said the jury.
“Landscape architects have again demonstrated a deeper sense of community conscience, innovation and passion, working on projects with little or no budget to guide and nurture outcomes, acting as true stewards of the public realm,” they continued.

“Queenslanders should be so proud of these projects as they exemplify the well planned open, play or green spaces that we enjoy as part of our outdoor lifestyle - especially in our ever-expanding urban areas where planning has never been more vital,” comments Georgina Scriha, Queensland Chapter Manager, Australian Institute of Landscape Architects.
The projects awarded an Award of Excellence and a Landscape Architecture Award at state level will proceed through to the national awards to take place in October in Sydney as part of the 2017 International Festival of Landscape Architecture.
