BARREL LID BUILDING FACADE
14 Dec 2022
Putting colour on the palette, Eloisa Ramos and Moreno Castellano of Ramos Castellano Arquitectos aided in bringing colour and life to the National Arts, Crafts and Design Centre in Mindelo, Cape Verde.
Inspired by the archipelago trade history and the material used for the distribution of imports and exports, the national centre is coated in an array of colour from barrel lids. Lining the façade of the new building, the colourful barrel lids counter and complement the white interior and brighten up the centre’s exterior.
The colourful barrel lids also work as a passive cooling system as they can be opened and closed to let sunlight and air into the building.
Apart of the project included the rejuvenation of rooms and spaces within the centre, alongside an open-air patio and new building. The restoration team also helped to maintain the historic old house that is adjoining to the colourful coated building.
