CONTEMPORARY OFF-GRID REST AREA
17 Oct 2022
An off-grid rest area on Goulburn Valley Highway has said goodbye to the days of wooden outhouses and portaloos and welcomes contemporary architecture in the middle of Australian desert environment.
The Calder Woodburn Rest Area by BKK Architects adorns stylish glossy tiles, concrete elements and lightweight corrugated steel roofing that can withstand the harsh Australian climate and will stand the test of time. The contemporary rest area takes inspiration from the 50s and seamlessly integrates it with modern architecture with these durable materials. The architectural features of circular skylights create ever-changing patterns through shadows and light that change throughout the day.
As the sun sets on the desert valley, the rest area illuminates with careful light placement the rest area is easy to navigate and creates a cool and calm tone to the hardscape.
The use of durable materials throughout the build not only contribute to the longevity of the structure but were cost-effective and reduced the cost of the build, such as the use of concrete in outdoor furniture and structural integrity.
