Custom Infrastructure Brings Cultural Storytelling to Life

The new Queens Park Ceremonial, Healing and Remembrance Place in Ipswich, Queensland, showcases how meaningful First Nations engagement can shape contemporary Australian public landscape design, with GX Outdoors contributing to the delivery of a culturally significant community space.

Custom Infrastructure Brings Cultural Storytelling to Life

Located within a broader landscape of traditional bora grounds, the project was shaped through consultation with Ipswich City Council, Traditional Owners and the community to balance remembrance with learning, healing and ongoing community connection. The resulting circular gathering space, sculptural installations and interpretive features help bring to life a place where the region’s cultural and history are woven into a welcoming and functional space for future generations in the rapidly-growing city.

Working with the project team, GX Outdoors supplied a suite of infrastructure designed to complement the vision for the site while ensuring long-term durability and functionality, including a bespoke circular shelter featuring laser-cut artwork, a distinctive landmark within the central gathering space.

The project also incorporates supporting amenities, including GX Outdoors' Akuna drinking fountain and Citistyle heritage bin enclosures, selected to integrate with the character of the landscape while providing practical benefits for park users.

GX Outdoors CEO Martin Rowland said, “Queens Park reflects a broader evolution we are seeing in public space design, where infrastructure is expected to do more than perform a functional role.

“Increasingly, we are working with councils, landscape architects and communities who are looking to integrate storytelling, culture and local identity throughout every touchpoint of their spaces.

“This shift in the way landscape infrastructure is being specified – embedding the narratives into the built environment through customised and semi-customised infrastructure – is resulting in spaces that are both functional and culturally meaningful.

“Projects like Queens Park are creating lasting value for communities while setting a benchmark for future civic landscape projects.”

About Queens Park Ceremonial, Healing and Remembrance Place, Ipswich

The Queens Park Ceremonial, Healing and Remembrance Place is the result of several years of engagement between Ipswich City Council, Traditional Owners, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community members, Indigenous service personnel and their descendants. Developed under the City of Ipswich Indigenous Accord 2020-2025, the project responds to the cultural significance of Queens Park, which sits within a broader landscape of traditional bora grounds used for ceremony, dispute resolution and community gatherings. Community consultation helped shape key design elements including the circular gathering space, sculptural installations and interpretive features, creating a place that supports truth-telling, education, healing and cultural connection while acknowledging First Nations experiences throughout history.
