INDIGENOUS MEMORIAL A WINNER

The awards were revealed in a live stream on Friday 5 June, which marked the beginning of chapter awards for the Australian Institute of Architects (AIA) in 2020.

Designed by Edition Office and Indigenous artist Daniel Boyd, For Our Country took a range of awards including the Canberra Medallion, the Cynthia Breheny Award for Small Project Architecture, the Pamille Berg Award for Art in Architecture and the Robert Foster Award for Light in Architecture.

For Our Country is a memorial that honours the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders who served in the military, and remembers those who died in the Frontier Wars.

Despite its size, “[the project carries] an enormous weight of significance,” said ACT jury chair Marcus Graham. “For Our Country reflects honestly upon a complex history, and looks forward to greater cultural understanding.”

There were 43 entries across 14 categories. Award entries will progress to the National Architecture Awards, which will be announced in November.
