MIFGS 2026: A Shift Toward More Intentional Outdoor Spaces

Each year, the Melbourne International Flower and Garden Show (MIFGS) offers a glimpse into where outdoor design is heading. In 2026, that direction felt more considered than ever.

Under the theme Kaleidoscope, the show brought together a wide range of styles and interpretations. Yet beneath that variation, there was a clear consistency in how gardens were approached, not louder or more complex but more intentional.

Across the show, spaces felt more resolved. Materials worked together with greater purpose, and planting sat more comfortably within the structure of each garden. There was a sense that every element had a role to play, rather than competing for attention.

GARDENS DESIGNED TO BE LIVED IN

One of the most noticeable shifts was how gardens are increasingly being designed as extensions of indoor spaces. Rather than open, undefined layouts, many spaces were broken into more purposeful areas, places to gather, to sit, to move through and to pause.

Seating zones, quieter viewing areas and transitional pathways were all carefully considered, creating gardens that felt intuitive and comfortable to be in.

This approach brings a new level of clarity to outdoor design. It's no longer about how a space looks but how it functions, how people move through it and how it supports everyday use.

STRUCTURE PROVIDING CLARITY

Structure played a quiet but defining role across the show. Edges were more deliberate, planting zones more controlled and transitions between materials more considered. These elements weren't used to dominate the space but to give it order, allowing planting to sit naturally while still feeling contained and resolved.

When structure is handled well, it simplifies everything around it. It creates clarity in both design and the build, making spaces easier to construct, easier to maintain and ultimately more successful over time.

MATERIALITY THAT REFLECTS THE ENVIRONMENT

Material selection followed a similar direction. There was a strong presence of steel, stone and other long-life materials, chosen not just for their appearance but how they perform in Australian conditions. These materials were not hidden; they were expressed, becoming part of the overall design language.

Edging, retaining elements and structural forms were used confidently, contributing to both the visual identity and functionality of each space. The result was a series of garden that felt grounded and enduring, designed not just for the show but for real-world application.

DETAIL AT EVERY SCALE

Another standout was the consistency of design across different scales. Whether in large show gardens or compact balcony spaces, the same level of thought and consideration was applied. Smaller gardens were not simplified, they were resolved. Structure, materiality and planting were all used with the same intent, just adapted to suit the footprint.

It reinforced the idea that well-considered outdoor spaces are not defined by size but by how effectively they are put together.

A BALANCE BETWEEN SOFTNESS AND CONTROL

Planting remained a strong feature throughout the show, but it was consistently supported by underlying structure.

Soft, flowing grasses and indigenous planting palettes introduced movement and texture, while defined edges and controlled layouts ensured the spaces remained clear and manageable.

This balance allowed the gardens to feel natural and relaxed, without losing their sense of order.

WHERE SHAPESCAPER FITS

Across 27 gardens at MIFGS 2026, ShapeScaper products were used in a wide range of applications, from large-scale installations through to smaller, more compact spaces.

What stood out was their adaptability.

In some gardens, they created strong definition and structure. In others, they worked more subtly, guiding movement, shaping spaces and supporting planting without drawing attention to themselves.

That flexibility reflects the direction the industry is heading, towards materials and systems that can respond to different scales and styles while still delivering consistent outcomes.

MIFGS 2026: A Shift Toward More Intentional Outdoor Spaces

If this year's show demonstrated anything, it's that outdoor design is becoming more refined, more intentional and more aligned with how people actually live.

ShapeScaper is proud to support designers and builders at every level and to be a part of an industry that continues to evolve with purpose. Because the future of Australian greenspaces isn't defined by a single style, but by the ability to adapt, respond and create spaces that truly work.
