The conversion of the adjacent Moore's Wharf car park into 380sqm of publicly accessible land will substantially increase the area available to visitors, giving the precinct capacity to absorb greater numbers during peak periods, particularly across the summer swimming season.

New lawn areas will form the core of the expanded zone, providing open ground for towels, picnics and general relaxation. These will be complemented by additional landscaping and planting for shade, along with new seating distributed through the precinct.

THE UPGRADES WILL INCLUDE:

• Relocating a section of the existing eastern fence line and converting operational space at Port Authority of NSW’s adjacent Moore’s Wharf site into approximately 380 square metres of additional public open space – roughly the size of a four bedroom home and backyard.
• Creating new lawn areas for lounging and picnicking, complemented by additional planting, seating and shade
• New changing facilities
• A new entry area with upgraded paving

Minister for Planning and Public Spaces Paul Scully said, “We’re expanding the public space around the popular Harbour swim spot just in time for summer, so more people will be able to make the most of the picturesque foreshore.”

The project builds on earlier improvements to the swimming area and responds directly to community feedback of Sydney's first new harbour swimming spot in decades, seeking more space and improved amenities.

These upgrades follow stage one works last year which saw the Government deliver:

• A larger swimming area with a realigned shark net
• A new outdoor shower
• A new platform and non-slip stairs for safer water access
• Integrated sandstone steps for improved water entry
• Additional towel space through relocated sandstone blocks
• A depth marker to support swimmer safety

Construction is due to start this month, with the upgraded facilities expected to open in time for summer.
