Plans to Transform Kurnell Peninsula

The NSW Government has releases its plans to rezone the Kurnell Peninsula in the Sutherland Shire into a thriving mixed-use precinct. The proposal aims to develop on the 210-hectare sand mine, transforming it into a community hub with an additional 4,300 new homes, as well as retail and tourism opportunities and public spaces.

Plans to Transform Kurnell Peninsula

The State-Assessed Rezoning Proposal which is now on public exhibition proposes to transform the coastal sand mine into a vibrant community with thousands of new homes, commercial and community facilities. Importantly, the proposal also aims to preserve over 50 percent of the site for open spaces - 116 hectares including three district parks, nine local parks and sports fields, plus two kilometres of public beachfront along Bate Bay.

A total 7,000 sqm of retail and commercial space has also been proposed, as well as upgrades to Captain Cook Dr to improve traffic flow and emergency access to the peninsula.

Currently home to about 2,000 people, development of the area, which is approximately six kilometres east of Cronulla CBD, would be delivered over 20 years in a staged approach, as remediation is completed and the sand mine is closed. As the western portion of the site has already been remediated it is envisioned as a town centre and the first stage of development. Other parts of the site will be remediated over time providing land for further homes, open space and retail and commercial development.

Minister for Planning and Public Spaces Paul Scully said, “The planned closure of the sand mine and remediation of the Kurnell Peninsula presents an exciting opportunity to transform the area. This proposal envisions a vibrant new beachfront community with thousands of new homes, jobs and great open space in the Sutherland Shire."
