SMART PARK TECHNOLOGY

A local park in Joondalup, WA incorporates several innovative technologies that hope to change the way we use our public parks. Find out how the City of Joondalup and Telstra are making such a future possible.
Local Mayor Troy Pickard has announced a smart park trial in conjunction with Telstra for the residents of Tom Simpson Park. As part of the city’s digital transformation strategy, the smart park trial aims to help drive innovation and economic growth for Joondalup and Perth’s northern corridor.
The technology utilised in the Tom Simpson Park will aim to make it easier for the thousands of people who visit each month, helping them find parking and keeping the area clean and safe for all.
Some of the technology on trial includes:
- Environmental sensors that monitor light, temperature, noise, humidity and pollution levels in the park in real-time.
- A smart bin solution with sensors on the 32 bins located in the park that notify the waste services team when bins need to be emptied. This will allow the city to manage rubbish collection more efficiently and gain insights into which areas of the park are being more frequently accessed by the community.
- An IoT enabled smart car park connected to the Telstra mobile network that shows how many spaces are available to people travelling to the area, helping traffic flows during peak periods and summer holidays.
- An analytics tool and dashboard that provides a real-time view of how the park and its infrastructure are being used. This helps the city to monitor park facilities and use resources more efficiently to allow the more effective planning.
- The technology also helps the caretakers manage the park more efficiently. The real-time data and IoT dashboard helps caretakers understand how the park is being used and incorporate these insights into future designs.
If successful the smart park in Joondalup could change the way we utilise technology in the design and maintenance of our future public spaces.
