WHARF TRANSFORMED

Queensland’s Howard Smith Wharf is under development to be transformed into an exciting public precinct with a new luxury hotel and entertainment hall. It is hoped the project will introduce new jobs and activate community engagement.
The new $200 million Howard Smith Wharf development is well under way, with builders taking the next step in revitalising the river precinct. Located beneath the iconic Story Bridge, the project adds to Queensland's extensive pipeline of infrastructure developments, with construction of the $3.6 billion Queen’s Wharf Brisbane development.
Earlier this year Dexus was given the green light for their $1.4bn proposal to transform nearby Eagle Street Pier into a premium business, hotel and leisure destination. The Howard Wharves project will soon be gearing up to entertain patrons, one year since construction commenced.
A key component of the precinct includes a new five-star hotel, developed by the Deague Group, and Howards Hall, designed by architecture firm Woods Bagot, which are set to open in November 2018. The 1100 square metre hall will have views of the Story Bridge and Brisbane skyline and will provide a place for multi-functional events that will engage the community.
More than 80 percent of the site has been allocated as public space, including activated open spaces and a $17 million landscaping budge.
Tourism Industry Minister Kate Jones said the development had created around 200 local construction jobs, “This key project will change the face of our city forever. Once it’s operational, Howard Smith Wharves will create another 800 jobs.”
Howard Smith Wharves chief executive Luke Fraser said more than $200 million will be invested to revitalise the precinct. “The river is the beating heart of Brisbane. We’re harnessing the natural beauty of Brisbane to create experiences that will lure visitors and give locals a new way to enjoy their city.”
