Multinational engineering and design office Atkins has been appointed to develop a large-scale office development in the Chinese city of Guangzhou. Commissioned by China Communications Construction Company (CCCC), the project consists of three stand-alone structures housing high-end work space.

Entitled ‘Window of Guangzhou’, the scheme takes its name from the large voids that puncture two of the monumental façades. The third and tallest tower rises to a height of 208 meters offering expansive views across the metropolis below.

From a distance the development reads as ’001′, designed to symbolise Guangzhou as the first Chinese city open for international trading several dynasties ago.

“Our design provides a dramatic visual impact, ensuring that the breathtaking view of the Zhujiang river is maximised for the occupants and the community behind the project as well‘, explained Ky Cheung, Atkins’ Senior Design Director.

“We incorporated green architecture design principles such as solar shading and air flow through the buildings to provide shelter from sun and rain typical in this hot and humid part of southern china.”

Shu Guang, Project Director at CCCC, added: “Atkins’ design concept demonstrates the importance of Guangzhou as a gateway to china for the world. The window-shaped buildings promote the city’s image as an important location for China’s import and export business.”
