Developing Environmentally Responsible Playgrounds

Andrew Smith Timber Creations create bespoke timber playgrounds and structures from Australian hardwoods that are as creative as they are sustainable. These projects have won several awards and can be found Australia-wide.

Developing Environmentally Responsible Playgrounds

It is well documented that timber is one of the best playground materials around; it blends with the surrounding environment, is aesthetically pleasing, boasts a host of health benefits, and is environmentally responsible. But where do you get timber for a playground? Why not direct from the site?

Australia is blessed with some of the best hardwoods in the world, but too often trees must be removed for safety or social development and they head straight for the chipper. Andrew Smith Timber Creations rescues these trees, giving them a new life as some of the best playgrounds in the country.

In 2009, Pimelea Park in Wetherill Park needed an upgrade, and the beautiful 80-year-old Greybox trees were dying and becoming dangerous. Playground consultant Fiona Robbé enlisted the help of Timber Creations to save these trees, and make them safe for children to continue to enjoy. From this process, Lizard Log Park was born! Nearly every single piece of these old trees went back into the playground, for climbing, balancing, imaginative play and sculpture. The playground has won many awards over the last eight years.

The Stockland’s development in Willowdale was the result of some much-needed new housing in the area. While some existing trees were kept, some had to come down. These rescued trees now continue to benefit the community in Willowdale Regional Park. Timber Creations inspected the timber for possible uses, supervised the tree lopping, and when the landscape was ready in 2016, the playground was brought to life. Now Willowdale has an iconic park, made from truly local timber.
