With giant tunnel boring complete, the focus for Sydney Metro West project is shifting to building the line and its stations. Architecture firms Bates Smart, SAA Architects, John McAslan + Partners, Neeson Murcutt Neille, Stewart Architecture and Aileen Sage Architects have been appointed to design the five stations: Westmead, North Strathfield, Burwood North, Five Dock and The Bays. Gamuda, with Laing O’Rourke and DT Infrastructure, will build stations, with the team now mobilising on site.

The new Metro West stations are also expected to anchor major housing developments across Sydney. These developments are planned alongside new jobs, public spaces and active transport connections, turning the Metro West corridor into a series of well-connected neighbourhoods.

Minister for Transport John Graham said the stations will be more than just places to catch a train. “These will be gateways to their communities and the rest of the Metro West line,” he said. “We are literally shaping the city with these stations by building tens of thousands of well-located homes around them. This is the public’s first chance to get a sense of how these stations will look.”

Early works will begin at North Strathfield, Burwood North, Five Dock and The Bays stations this month, including delivery of machinery and equipment, set up of temporary work sites, including site offices, utilities investigations and maintenance, survey works, traffic management and maintenance.

Full construction expected to begin by the end of the year, with the Sydney Metro West line due to open in 2032.
