TRADING INDOOR ART TO OUTDOOR CINEMA
08 Jul 2021
Fondazione Prada art centre in Milan has completely transformed its cinema complex to showcase its new film series titled ‘Multiple Canvases.’
The reactivation of the summer screening program has paved the way for the open-air projection room that combines the internal and external aspects of the space to create Multiple Canvases. The new space is an assimilation of the luxe interior and the picturesque courtyards, combining all the features of the architectural complex created by Rem Koolhaas through the use of movable walls.
Viewers can expect an integrated experience of the building and content, that will engage the senses and present a unique viewing of the films queued. The concept of “Subjective” will be explored in the screening, with differing individual personalities from the world art and culture featuring films they have noted were significant in their exclusive and artistic development. The series will combine perspectives from creatives including Pedro Almodóvar, John Baldessari, Danny Boyle, and Theaster Gates. The screenings will run from Thursday to Saturday beginning from July second, till July 24th for three screenings a week. Luigi Alberto Cippini, the curator of Fondazione’s cinema program, noted in anticipation of the opening that;
“Cinema could be understood as a collective dream project, linking subjectivities and screen-materials via personal-depth and social gathering formats. ‘Multiple Canvases’ hybridizes the deeply personal visual preferences of four major international artists as a testbed for the theatrical screen of becoming a collective dream-machine.”
Fondazione Prada’s outdoor cinema forms part of a well established Milanese tradition of the practice and is a much-anticipated event especially following the easing of COVID-19 restrictions in the area.
