URBAN ‘CITYTREE’ AIR FILTER
11 Jul 2017
The latest in pollution-busting greenery claims to clean as much polluted air as an entire forest. The CityTree- a high-tech green wall- could be coming to a city near you.
With as much air-purifying power as 275 urban trees, the CityTree is a green wall moss culture that was co-created by Zhengliang Wu. Wu states that “Moss cultures have a much larger leaf surface area than any other plant. Meaning we can capture more pollutants.”
The CityTree comes in at a compact 4-meters-tall, 3-meters-wide and 2.19 meters deep, complete with or without a public bench and space for advertising.
The product claims that its large surface area of moss allows the CityTree to remove dust, nitrogen dioxide and ozone gases from the air. In addition, the installations are fully autonomous, as solar panels provide electricity and collected rainwater is filtered into a reservoir where it is pumped into the soil.
The CityTree comes complete with WiFi sensors that measure the soil humidity, temperature and water quality. “We also have pollution sensors inside the installation, which help monitor the local air quality and tell us how efficient the tree is.” said Wu.
A CityTree can reportedly absorb around 250 grams of particulate matter each day, with the removal of over 240 metric tons of C02 over the course of a year.
So far Green City Solutions has seen the installation of 20 CityTrees in major cities and urban centres around the world- including Paris, Oslo, Hong Kong and Brussels. The CityTree retails at $25,000 USD each and represents a significant investment into the carbon reduction of a city.
The company has announced plans to introduce the invention to India as their next destination, a country where air pollution has reached dangerous levels in certain locations.
