Waves Power Lighthouse Hotel

A renewable energy lighthouse hotel has been proposed to be located off the coast of South Korea, which will harness power from the waves in order to be completely self-sufficient.

Waves Power Lighthouse Hotel

Margot Krasojević Architecture has proposed the hotel to be located off the coast of mainland South Korea near the island of Jeju. The concept integrates the issue of renewable energy as the form of the building is envisioned to harness wave power, providing a source of electricity.

The scheme comprises of three main elements that include the living, circulation and social areas. The structure utilises an existing oil rig, using the current platform for structural support onto which the offshore hotel is designed. Guests would access the accommodation by boat from the coast, making for a unique travel experience.

Krasojević has designed the structure of the hotel to be clad in layered aluminium, which wraps around the building and enclose hydropower turbines that produce electrical energy when they are lowered into the sea. These turbines convert kinetic water energy into electrical energy, generating enough power to run the lighthouse and desalination filters, with any surplus energy stored.

The hotel is fabricated from a series of partly inflated, moulded ETFE membrane sections. Lightweight yet durable, these airlock sections split apart and float in the event of a rogue wave or an emergency.

The lantern room, located at the top of the hotel, is revealed when the elevations lower during storms. The glass lantern light projects out over the entire area, creating an illuminated glass canopy lobby. The refracted light intensifies as it beams out into its surroundings, blurring the edges between interior and exterior space.

The lighthouse hotel by Krasojević aims to integrate renewable energy into the design process. In addition to generating its own power, the hotel will offer volunteer opportunities for guests to engage with biodiversity and sustainable initiatives. The hotel intends to be a transformational and unique travel experience, offering a range of off-grid activities.
