Sense of Place

A sustainable piece of artwork together with a memorable sense of place has given new life to the Victorian Alpine Region.

Sense of Place

The award-winning Falls Creek Project was a joint venture between PTA Landscapes and PL Fountains which saw the development and construction of a sustainable piece of artwork in the Victorian Alpine Region.

Completed in 2010 for Falls Creek Resort Management, the water feature, a concept designed in conjunction with Tract Consultants, was in response to a need by management to provide character to a mostly featureless area devoid of significant vegetation due to the clearing of the site for functionality during the peak of winter.

The existing site was once the confluence of two creeks now buried deep below the ground. The area was rich with history and long before settlement, indigenous people gathered regularly in the area to harvest the Bogon moth, which seasonally swarms in abundance to the high plains and was a sought after source of food.

PTA Landscapes was approached to provide a memorable sense of place in both summer and winter and develop a multi-purpose space with the ability to stage a wide range of events in all seasons from village functions such as Carols by Candlelight to demonstrations during the ski season.

The finished product designed in conjunction with Tract Consultants and constructed by the teams at PTA Landscapes and PL Fountains saw the development of an upper tier amphitheatre, a 30m long waterfall and a bubbling mountain stream articulated by way of a contemporary arrangement of pondages and cascades all fed by the freshwater from the existing creek.

An abstract pattern inspired by the Bogong Moth swarms was laser cut and backlit in the corten wall behind the waterfalls to draw on the rich history of the area.
